As the festive season approaches, concerns are growing over potential whole turkey shortages, impacting Christmas celebrations. According to reports from our suppliers, this shortage is a direct consequence of the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even though Covid feels well and truly behind us now, the poultry industry has been significantly affected by the pandemic. A contributing factor to the anticipated turkey shortage is the redirection of staff from turkey production (a seasonal product) to chicken production, which has seen heightened demand. Poultry producers, already contending with workforce shortages and disruptions in the supply chain, were forced to prioritise chicken production during the pandemic.
This shift in workforce has inevitably impacted the production capacity for turkeys, a staple of Christmas feasts. The delicate balance in production has been disrupted, effecting the timely availability of whole turkeys this Christmas season.
Efforts are currently underway to address these supply issues and optimise production; however, industry experts anticipate that the demand for whole turkeys during Christmas will surpass the available supply.
Jerome Hoban from Gamekeepers says “We’ve already experience huge turkey demand from Canadian Thanksgiving in early October, and with American Thanksgiving coming up, we are strongly encouraging our wholesale and retails customers to plan ahead and consider ordering early if you want whole turkey on your menus this Christmas.”
